Three singles Solitude, Serenity, and Big Blue make up the club's sculling fleet. A recreational single is somewhat wider and more stable than a racing single and therefore easier to row, but the boat must still be handled with care and requires some ability and instruction in order to row it safely and enjoyably. There is no special charge for rowing a single. The club’s board has adopted a set of guidelines for the boat’s use.
The essence of the guidelines is as follows:
Complete regulations available HERE.
- Only regular members may row the singles.
- Only those who qualify may row the singles without supervision.
- Rowers new to rowing a single must have a check row observed on the water by an experienced sculler/regular GORC member.
- Singles must be reserved using the on-line reservation calendar.
- Rowers of the single must be able to swim.
- Minors may not scull unless accompanied by another qualified sculler.
- Handling the boat (and launching and recovering) is much easier on you and the boat with two people than for one person alone. The boat weighs 45#.
